Ready to train your dog or puppy? Here’s what you need to start…
Tools of the trade – a collar or harness, 6 ft leash, treat pouch (an 80’s fanny pack from the attic works too 😊) and a stash of your dog’s favorite treats.
Patience and Understanding – training takes time, patience and a willingness to learn. Just like you, your puppy will continue to learn throughout her life.
A positive attitude and sense of fun – so you and your dog will look forward to training.
Figure out what motivates your dog – is it treats, a favorite toy, or a game of fetch? Combine this with praise and you will be amazed at how much harder your dog will work.
Understand that dogs will do the things we reinforce – so be fast, consistent and enthusiastic with rewards and praise.
Learn about dog body language. Even though she can’t talk, your puppy will let you know how she feels.
Meet your dog or puppy at his level – regardless of how old your dog or puppy is, don’t assume what he “should know by now.” A professional assessment will help you determine a good starting point.
Give your dog daily exercise - to maintain his physical and mental well-being. A long walk or game of fetch in the backyard is also another opportunity to strengthen your relationship.
