Summer Safety Tips
Summer is a wonderful time for exploring with your dog. By following a few safety tips, you and your best friend can happily hit the trails, water and parks together.
Keep your dog healthy
· Make sure your dog is protected from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes and be sure his vaccinations are up to date.
· Keep your dog at a healthy weight.
· If you are starting a new physical activity like hiking, talk to your vet so that you can safely ease your dog into this activity.
Be wary of the heat
· Your dog should always have access to cool, fresh drinking water, shade and/or air conditioning.
· Asphalt, sand and dark gravel can get incredibly hot and may burn your dog’s paws. Test the area with your own foot.
· Avoid physical activity when it’s very hot. Instead aim for early mornings or evenings.
· Never, under any circumstances, leave your dog in closed car.
Going to the lake or beach
· Don’t assume your dog can swim. If you aren’t sure, invest in a life jacket or keep him in areas that he can touch the bottom.
· Find a shady spot and keep fresh water nearby.
· Swimming is a very strenuous activity. Keep your dog from overdoing it.
· Rinse him off at the end of the outing, especially if he’s been in saltwater.
And last, but not least, make these delicious, frozen treats for your dog to enjoy on hot days…
· 3 ripe bananas
· 32 ounces plain yogurt
· 1 cup of peanut butter (no xylitol)
Blend all ingredients. Then pour the mixture into ice trays, cups or molds. In 2 hours, you’ll have a cool treat for your dog to enjoy!
