Ready for a road trip?

Taking your dog on vacation can be a wonderful experience for your family.  Plan ahead with these simple tips.

Veterinary Information and Medicines

Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all his vaccinations and bring a copy of his medical records.  If your dog requires medicine, make sure you have extra doses just in case your trip lasts longer than expected.

Dry Run and Place in the car

Is your dog used to long rides in the car?  If not, start early and slowly build up his tolerance to more time in the car.  Keep the car well ventilated and make it a fun experience.  Your dog should have his own dedicated space in the car that is large enough for him to sit up or stretch out to sleep.

Food and Supplies

Bring an extra day’s worth of dog food, bottled water and poop bags.  Also be sure to bring a sturdy collar/harness and leash.  Your collar should have an identification tag and rabies tag.  Two stable bowls will make it easier to feed and water your pup on the road.

Comforts of Home

If possible, bring your dog’s bed, blanket and favorite toys/bones.  If your dog is crate-trained, consider bringing it if you are staying overnight.  If your regular crate is too big and heavy, there are collapsible crate options.  If you will be using a new crate, give your dog time to get used to it before leaving.

Bathroom and Exercise Breaks

Your dog will need regular breaks along the way so plan accordingly.  Scouting out dog-friendly areas in advance will make your breaks more fun and relaxing.

Off you go into the wild, blue yonder!
