Why is regular exercise important for your dog?

With every checkup, my doctor never fails to remind me about the importance of “exercising my mind and body.” The same can be said for our dogs and puppies.  They need exercise as much as we do to be their best selves.

Keeps your dog young at heart

Regular exercise is important for maintaining a healthy weight, hip/joint flexibility and cardiovascular health.  Keep your pet’s age and current health in mind when choosing an activity.  If you are unsure, reach out to your veterinarian for recommendations.

It’s fun and provides mental stimulation

Taking a hike in the woods, exploring a new neighborhood or playing fetch in the backyard are wonderful ways to spend time with your dog.  New smells, sights and sounds will keep his mind sharp.  It also allows you to incorporate skills (loose leash walking, recall and obedience cues) into daily life.  Just be sure to pick an activity that your dog enjoys.

Exercise serves to strengthen your bond

Having fun, exercising and learning together will bring you and your dog closer.  With that bond comes mutual respect, trust and love.  Plus, you will never have a more willing or cuter workout partner!
