Happy Holidays!
For many of us, Christmas is our favorite time of year. I look forward to spending time with family and friends, eating my mom’s apple pie and seeing the neighborhood lights. To ensure that our celebrations are dog-friendly, be mindful of the following:
Keep your dog’s routine the same
Just like us, our dogs can be creatures of habit. As much as possible, allow your dog to keep her routine – mealtimes, bedtimes and exercise/playtime.
Reserve a quiet space for your dog
Give your dog a quiet space and time away from the extra noise and people. Watch for signs of stress.
Watch out for toxic plants and foods
Keep your dog away from these plants:
· mistletoe, poinsettia, holly berries and ivy.
And these foods:
· chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, avocado, alcohol, and items with xylitol.
Watch your dog around the Christmas tree, ornaments, tinsel and wrapping paper
Monitor your dog with children
Dogs should never be left alone with young children. Ensure that your children are being gentle and give your dog quiet time as needed.
And last, but not least, should you wish to give your dog a special treat…
Mix the following ingredients:
1 cup pumpkin
½ cup peanut butter
2 eggs
¼ cup liquid oil (coconut is nice, canola works)
2½ cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Roll the dough into balls or shape using a cookie cutter. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes and then let cool. Enjoy!
